My foam ones have been up for 3.5 years now and no sign of damage from the elements, but I go up and fill the new holes the woodpeckers put in them every year. They don't rot, but they do get holes from the woodpeckers that I fill with brown silicon.davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11608589214882334649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4922503085503427986.post-53845338766864470012019-11-25T06:59:16.349-07:002019-11-25T06:59:16.349-07:00Fiberspan Concrete Vigas are made from a concrete ...Fiberspan Concrete Vigas are made from a concrete composite. They are not heavy, about 7 lbs, and indestructible. The cost for an 8" diameter Viga tail is $139 ea. Not inexpensive in the short term, but long term they will never deteriorate. For 17 years fcelements.com vigas have been installed without a single problem. Fiberspan Vigas are on probably 400 plus homes now.Phil Bigelowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11793189312439756094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4922503085503427986.post-63335537723613734472018-06-12T22:08:40.316-07:002018-06-12T22:08:40.316-07:00Phil, that's a nice product, and I'll add ...Phil, that's a nice product, and I'll add it to my list of possibilities that I tell people about, but you don't have any prices on the site. At least I couldn't find any. I didn't come across your site when I was frantically trying to find something to fill the holes on my house with besides wood, or you would have received a call.

But it would have been with great reluctance. It's tough for me to pursue something that I don't have a clue how much it cost.

The foam ones I have seem to be able to last forever with a tiny bit of maintenance. Once a year I plug up the holes on the top of them that the woodpeckers made with caulk and touch up the paint. Concrete would solve the hole problem, but the paint would still have to be seen to. Last year I used brown caulk and skipped the paint for a year since the holes aren't visible from the ground.

But, I'll let people know your product exists when I see other folk with the same problem. I get asked about this roughly three or four times a year.davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11608589214882334649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4922503085503427986.post-79009815984781242862018-06-12T15:37:04.230-07:002018-06-12T15:37:04.230-07:00I want to recommend my own solution to replacing w...I want to recommend my own solution to replacing wood viga tails. Looks better that urethane foam vigas and will never deteriorate. I invented them 15 years ago while building my home in Northern, AZ. Check out fcelements.com. If they work, I'll be making some in the garage using whatever I can find. I can just see a little battery operated computer, a cheap microphone, and a noise maker of some kind. If it actually scares away my winged pests, it would be great.

Thanks a lot for the pointer.davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11608589214882334649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4922503085503427986.post-38590582565936542632016-05-03T21:22:10.107-07:002016-05-03T21:22:10.107-07:00sorry about all the typo's ... feel free to cl...sorry about all the typo's ... feel free to clean that up Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995474696064493398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4922503085503427986.post-78067477088011153112016-05-03T21:21:15.084-07:002016-05-03T21:21:15.084-07:00Hey, had may issue with these bastards up here in ...Hey, had may issue with these bastards up here in Colorado. You can get a permit from fish and game to shoot them. I told fish and game I had $700,000 reasons to shoo them ... didn't work. However, as stupid as these things look they actually worked for me:

http://attackspider.com/order-the-attack-spider-woodpecker-deterrent

They seem stupid as hell but they worked. I put on or two on each area of the house. Wood pecker hits the side of the house, spider drops down the line and crawls back up making a total racket. Woodpeckers stayed away. I put up 6, 2 died inside a couple of months and the rest lasted 2 whole seasons. Only one wood pecker was tough enough to just ignore them. Give them a try.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995474696064493398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4922503085503427986.post-29437667943554515602016-03-16T07:58:39.562-07:002016-03-16T07:58:39.562-07:00I actually got a note from a person at our Game an...I actually got a note from a person at our Game and Fish department. It seems that they're so destructive that when they were allowed to be hunted, they almost went extinct in this area. Not extinct as a species, but extinct right around here. Everyone and his brother was shooting them.

Frankly, I don't buy that explanation.davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11608589214882334649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4922503085503427986.post-52574195321867181912016-03-15T23:59:30.381-07:002016-03-15T23:59:30.381-07:00Solution looks great. I've put out plastic owls, worked for a bit, noise makers, same story. I've been told by some people I can kill them and FWC says I can get rid of them but I'm not sure how neighbors might react to me shooting the nasty things. Raiding their nests has produced very good results at thinning them out.....Mike Yeagerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10624780968288639678noreply@blogger.com
